The California King bed is a relatively modern addition to homes around the world. Beds were created and recreated since people needed a place to rest their heads. In the 1960s, however, people created no more leaves and twigs that could be placed on the forest floor. They did not stuff any mattresses with hay. People began to crave luxury, and luckily they could afford it at that time. How did we get here? How have the beds turned from dirt to huge, soft sleeping places?

The humble roots of the bed

The first beds were little more than leaves, animal skins and whatever our primitive eggs could find. But sometimes, as people became less nomadic, beds developed into structures that kept people off the ground. The first "lavish" beds were the beds of the Egyptian royals. Long stone steps lead to these beds, which were often covered by transparent curtains. These old beds even had pillows and possibly the first headboards. The Egyptians made the bed a luxury resort, just like the Greeks. In Homer's famous epic The Odyssey, Odysseus, a king, builds his wife a beautiful, jeweled bed. Even in these ancient times, the royal house slept in lush and sumptuous beds.

The kings and queens of California

Just like the high beds of the ancient Egyptians, the California King Bed was designed for the elite. However, these "elites" differed greatly from the pharaohs. In the 1950s, the king bed was sold as the largest bed in the market. In the 1960s, this newly adapted Californian addition was born. The furniture companies in Los Angeles made these huge beds especially for celebrities. These huge bunks, 4 inches longer than the king, were perfect for taking their places in the intense mansions of famous celebrities. They acted as a status symbol for luxury.

Everyone is a king

Today you do not have to be rich and famous to have a royal bed. In fact, these large beds have become a popular piece of furniture in homes around the world since the 1970s. European variants, the eastern king bed and the western king bed, became even more popular in the 1970s and 1980s when private mattress makers redesigned the mattress for international sale. If you need extra space for your feet or just need a king size bed, the California King bed is just what you need.
